A recognition of the fruits of an eight-year partnership between Lion New Zealand and Fiftyfive5. This has taken in over 120 projects and extended to further projects with other Lion divisions in Australia.

More specifically this award highlights Fiftyfive5’s continued programme success in using archetypes to reposition key Lion brands. Since 2014, six major Lion brands have been evaluated, with outputs including repositioning, pack and comms updates and development of innovation strategies. In all cases, these 6 brands have been driven into growth, some substantial turn around stories with impressive growth, for example Macs (+34% vol), Wither Hills (+42% vol), Emerson’s (+20% vol).

Working with Fiftyfive5, Bayer incorporated a thorough understanding of shopper behaviour and misconceptions into the development of a winning shelf solution for the allergy category.

In less than a year, this research led to the successful implementation of an optimised shelf solution in over 180 pharmacies in Australia. The new layout made the shopping experience simpler and more informative for shoppers. This delivered significant results with a sales uplift of 16.3% (value) in the trial stores and instore visibility increasing with shelf space for Nasonex growing at 200% and Claratyne at 35% versus pre-installation.

Mac’s beer was losing its relevancy in an increasingly cluttered market. This is a classical success story of how Lion, working closely with Fiftyfive5, gained significant new insights that helped Mac’s to re-focus and re-discover its brand authenticity.

The relaunch of Mac’s beer has seen a 24% increase in volume share growth and a 30% value growth. Further, the successful restaging has encouraged Lion NZ to roll out the Mac’s research approach across its top tier brands in New Zealand, and various parts of the Lion business in Australia. Fiftyfive5 worked with existing brand tracking data to identify a number of growth opportunities for Bacardi Rum and conducted qualitative research to develop a rum category strategy, which led to a significant turnaround in volume and value for the brand.


Fiftyfive5 examined growth opportunities and used its indepth understanding of the target audience and quantitative research to unearth a powerful insight that led to Bayer brand Iberogast becoming market leader in the Irritable Bowel Syndrome Support market.
