There really isn’t a ‘typical’ day for me. They range from being out and about carrying out fieldwork – in people’s homes, shopping with consumers, running focus groups or workshops – to analysis sessions with the project team. I love the variety that qualitative research offers and the fact that it is so exploratory in nature. Plus, it means I get to meet new and interesting people with each project!
When I look around the office I think the trait that unites FF5ers is tenacity. We are all very determined and driven people. I mean that in terms of our own progression and development, but mainly in terms of our clients’ success. We all share a desire to over-deliver and delight on every project… and we’re all a pretty clever, fun and social bunch!
The types of projects we work on and the way we approach them. Our projects are highly strategic, meaning they often have multiple stages with each stage looking to answer a key piece of the puzzle – it’s not a one-size-fits-all approach. Likewise, we use a wide range of cunning methodologies to unlock deeper level emotive responses to what can seem like very everyday products – a hard task!
Don’t be afraid to express yourself, to stand up and speak up. Express your opinion on what you have seen, heard and what you think the answer might be. Having a point of view is better than not having one at all and often it requires multiple points of view (across a project team) to really unlock an insight!

Coffee, shower, Weetbix – and after that it’s anyone’s guess. I head up Cultural Insights at Fiftyfive5, so I have a very balanced (and sometimes peculiar) workplace diet. From precision engineering meaning into new product packaging and unlocking the emergent meaning of luxury to triangulating the future of lollies and illuminating unintended messages buried in brand advertising… it’s all good, gnarly grist.
Curiosity, brains, guile. And a limitless appetite to dig beneath the surface.

I’d say every day is different at Fiftyfive5. It keeps you on your toes. If I had to name a constant it would be that there’s a lot of collaboration and considered thinking around the entire research process. From setting up projects, designing questionnaires and analysis, the end goal is always unlocking those nuggets of truth that can really shape our results.
Definitely that collaborative spirit and a healthy appetite for challenge!
I think it’s the upfront thinking behind the research objectives. I’ve never spent so long thinking about and delineating the questions we’re trying to answer, but it really makes things easier when it comes to uncovering and delivering our findings.
It might not seem like it at first, but with the right people and enough creative thinking there’s a solution to any challenge that’s thrown your way.

There are very few days in a week that are alike. One day I might be at my computer writing a debrief or doing desk research, and the next I might be driving all over Sydney conducting in-depth interviews with consumers in their home. It’s this variety that makes it totally unique.
Taking responsibility for your work and always striving to be better. Everyone is highly socially aware and conscientious. You’ve got to be a team player who can keep their cool under pressure and go with the flow when things change.
Everyone here takes ownership of their work. The team is extremely smart and hard working, and willing to teach and share their knowledge. Each person is someone you could grab a beer with. Our office is open and collaborative, and people choose to be here during their free time because they enjoy spending time with their co-workers in such a great environment.

In really simple terms, we help our clients identify how to grow their businesses by better understanding the dynamics of people, categories and brands to uncover opportunities for growth.
Could be lots of different things! I might have a client meeting to be briefed on a new project, or we could be having an internal team analysis session to build the key learnings from a segmentation. That’s one of the things I enjoy most about what I do – the diversity of different clients, projects and problems to solve. There’s always something interesting to stretch your thinking!
A bendy brain… a passion for problem solving… a desire to be stretched and challenged… a love of learning about people and brands… a talent for making the complex simple. Most important though is a desire to not just discover insights, but to be able to help clients use those insights to build their businesses.
